It's the first day of school and Mikey is wearing a new hoodie. It's black, like his tee-shirt, jeans, and eyeliner. Most boys don't wear eyeliner to school, but Mikey figures it's a good way to sort out the decent people from the ones he should stay away from anyway.

Mikey's a freshman, and the only person he knows at this school is Gerard, who is a senior. Their mom assures him at breakfast that he'll make lots of friends. Mikey is pretty good at making friends, unlike Gerard. Mikey doesn't quite understand that – Gerard is awesome. He's a little weird, but Mikey's the only person allowed to say that.

Homeroom is filled with other freshmen like Mikey. Everyone is given their schedules for the semester. Mikey has Algebra I first period – what stupid fucking luck. Well, at least he can get it over with quick.

“I didn't get one,” one boy says. He's short with hair dyed two different colors, and Mikey thinks he sees the glimpse of a tattoo under his short sleeve. Which is weird, because who gives a kid this young a tattoo?
